Some of the preliminary puppet concepts for a project that went nowhere.

The Ratt and Batt characters were to occupy the top and bottom of the TV screen. The concept required a floating puppeteer or at least one comfortable hanging by his or her ankles for extended periods of time. Whether or not guano would constantly fall onto Ratt was never fully decided.

Gwen was a fashionista, and was thusly prone to wearing shorts atop her head. She could crack walnuts with her beak. Bigwrench and his son Reench worked at the local garage. They too were unimpressed by the rising costs of gasoline.

Thorax, was a dreamer...a believer in the impossible and a purveyor of the improbable. He now kind of reminds me of Seth Rogen.

This Kid vs. Kat scenario was a request from a kid. Previous Kid vs. Kats' here...

I did not think I would ever draw them again but there you go...in all it's Photoshop Backgroundery. The TNT is obviously glued to Kid's teeth, lest he spit it out. When I worked on Kid vs. Kat, I pitched a scenario that would have the Kid's long lost Mom return to her family to open arms and tears of joy. Kid would be over the moon...his Mom's love brought them back together. The Mom was then to be unmasked as the nefarious Kat toying with the Kid's feeling as he would a foam mouse on a rubber band. It was deemed inappropriate.

"Why would any Mom come back to that kid?"

We did not win the contest, I was ready to spend the money on a personal vending machine that would sit by my workstation so as I could purchase (from myself) all of the Pepsi I wanted as the day rolled on. Alas, now I have to get up and move around to achieve carbonated glory. I don't listen to that radio station anyways, they never play Frank Yankovic and his Yanks; not ever!

More likely however, is that he is applying in person for a job which requires him to be sultry and seductive over the telephone. As such his lanky appearance and extra toes do not matter. Poor chap.

the DEMON was created by the legendary JACK KIRBY during his run at DC COMICS. Here is the character, ruined by myself. It was not a prominent story point in the comics, but the DEMON really enjoyed hot specialty drinks. I don't know what the heck is up with this guy. In some religions, being a priest is by human election or human choice. In the case of anthropomorphic canines, it is not entirely clear what the requirements are, other than that of being armless.

*An interesting side note, brought up in my visit to Wikipedia on the topic of armless canines depicted in religious garb: Stewart Elliott Guthrie theorizes in his book Faces in the Clouds: A New Theory of Religion, that all religions are anthropomorphisms that originate due to the brain's tendency to detect the presence of other humans in natural phenomena. Were that tendency not the case, perhaps we would never have Bugs Bunny, or Porky Pig. Interesting.

First up we have a feline having the unfortunate task of passing a brick thru it's bowels. Not even a well drawn brick, either.

I don't know what's going on with this dame (below). Not much. She is waiting for her bustline to grow I wager. Or, she is happy with who she is! Yes, that's funnier!

I decided to draw Ren and Stimpy again for the first time since it was originally on the air. Something...bad...happened to Ren's face however.

And of course, Hagar the Horrible. As he's never been seen.

I would actually not like to see Hagar ever treated this way in any sort of animation or what have you. It's bothersome. Now if they could render him in lifelike CG, now THAT would be far worse.

I prefer him as animated in this beer commercial, just like ol' Dik Browne would do. His voice here frightens me though; it's always jarring hearing a character speak when you have only read their words and thus formulated their voice in your own Neural Net.

Found amongst some of my refuse...a mere storyboard panel that had been edited out from the "Ed,Edd n' Eddy" episode 'Tinker Ed' in the storyboard stage. In the episode, Jimmy finds out that his beloved fairy tales are not real...he goes into a deep depression and whathaveyou...but the REAL story is that of Rolf's, whom becomes paranoid that everyone is out to get his backpack of baloney. Like a prairie mouse eating her young when a feral cat looms near, Rolf eventually succumbs and eats the
plethora of meat to protect it from harm.

It was at this point in the original storyboard that the now gorged Rolf began seeing magical creatures before him. All that is left of his delusions is this panel:

I recall there being something more to it, but this is all that exists now. The rest has been recycled long ago; perhaps the very 2-ply you used today.

Why it is the woman is thrown at an incredible forward thrust post-impact is unclear. It is possible the car itself is not in motion at all, but parked at a K-Mart or some such similar store and the woman has been endowed with amazing rubber like qualities after a chemical accident at the rubber plant down in the industrial district; after which she, obviously distraught by the accident, started running backwards through town only to eventually collide with the automobile in question. Was that considered a run-on sentence?

Whilst pondering all of this, it seems to become clearer if you are listening to ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" At least for me. I've taken the liberty of embedding it below...

A generic brand Energy Drink perched between the bosom of a diabetic woman with a scar on her head is perhaps one of the most sublime of images ever to come forth from my Sharpie brand felt marker. Her name is Beatrice and by day she is a temp at a fledgling insurance company. Some say she was destined to become obese the day her parents named her Beatrice. Others claim the name is a pseudonym; that her real name is Lauraline McGee hailing from Newark, NJ. The more baffling question is why she feels the need to hug so much caffeine with her protuberant mammaries.

Theodore Number is an oil man, cut from the script of "There Will Be Blood" in an early draft. Seems his penchant for pig-latin posed a problem for the director.

"Clean Cro-Mag" is as described: A clean Cro-Magnon woman, one who douches as often as she can. Soon to be a major Motion Picture.
This old guy is pretty hairy.
Now imagine the zany adventures these four will have when they become room-mates in a swanky high rise in Yaletown, Vancouver! Not to mention the antics of their wacky next-door neighbor!

Back in '04 I animated a very short spot for the program ZED-TV which aired on the CBC. ZED-TV has since stopped being made, in no part due to my contribution. (unless it took a couple of years to infect the series) Sharon Lewis (the host of said program) is the voice.

'Twas an enjoyable experience; I especially enjoyed making the "smear" frames for some reason. Note the horrible placement of the arm in this frame. (below)

The main character was made primarily out of a Snake-Light, some floral wire, and a spray-painted Potato-Head Kid. Originally she didn't have neon green lips that exude the notion that she was raised near nuclear waste, but orange ones. The orange-lipped version passed an approval stage before I began filming, it was only after I finished the piece that somebody at CBC decided she looked too much like a sambo-caricature. So, using modern technology, CBC (not me) altered her very look and she became the cherno-belle you see here. I think the other character was made out of FIMO, and he drives about in what was Big Bird's car from some toy. Here she is in her original orange-lipped glory. (minus her fake eyelashes)

Upon looking at the image of Rowdy Rowdy Piper that hasn't seen the light of day in approximately 2 decades, a memory springs to mind of how clever I thought it to add a viper beside his name because viper of course rymes with Piper. It is quite possibly the pinnacle of my cleverness. Never to be matched much less surpassed. Why King Kong Bundy has a train with his name I don't know. That memory is no longer with me.

For the head, you see, is made not of styrofoam or rice-cake...it's composed almost entirely of...I dunno, cement? cast iron? Christmas bundt cake? What's funny here? Certainly this character will go on to bigger and better things: comics, animation, and the Louvre. Unless of course he doesn't. What with no udder MOO-ARHEA is clearly a male, though the eye yearns to see an udder 'neath those back legs, doesn't it? An interesting phenomenon that.

I suppose the robot on this other page can be construed to be Optimus Prime now that I think about it. Not the new incarnation with the effeminate hourglass figure but the old clunky one from the glorious 80's

The girl's pupil certainly isn't terribly deformed. Certainly she can use it for all sorts of seeing. And it's deformity is only visible on close inspection...she is of course also missing irises, an affliction that caused no end of ridicule in her pubescence.

One should note: She is not heiling Hitler, nor is she hailing a cab. Methinks she is simply showing off her extremely long fingers. So long in fact that she is able to scratch her brain through her nostrils when it is itchy. Why it gets itchy I don't know.

Here is page one of the yet unfinished "Couple Chicks" comic...with INKS by the talented Christine Li, whom I work with at aka cartoon. We also collaborated on a couple of Ed, Edd n' Eddy stories for DC's Cartoon Network Block Party. Sadly at this time there isn't another in the pipeline. I have yet to add the dialogue; I have yet to write the dialogue...though in the thumbnail version there are some preliminary thoughts as to what it might be.

I don't know if I like the thumbnail version better or not, but here it is for comparison's sake. I do prefer the staging in panel 3 of the thumbnails now that I look at it. Gosh darn it, if that ain't a bag of buttertarts in a coal miner's pantaloons if I ever did encounter one.

Lest the title fool you, GETTING INTO YOUR PANTS is a book about a "simple, no-duh, weight-loss, body-best strategy that actually works – for life!" I haven't personally used the strategy, what with my addiction to PEPSI-COLA and penchant for slothenly habits, but rather illustrated it. Dr.Leslie Van Romer (chiropractor, weight loss cheerleader, and feel-good-about-you motivational health speaker) authored it. Check it out HERE...

Never before in my professional life have I had the opportunity to draw a girl getting her pants ripped off by her own sisters; though I'm certain during pubescence I drew girls getting their pants ripped off by someone or something...ahh youth...anyways, it was a fun experience... these are just a couple of the illustrations from the book. The dog in his naked form didn't make print however ~ he ending up wearing a suit.

A large speech bubble like the one above has a tendency to make me want to put down the comic that it's contained in. It seems as thought the playing field of words and pictures becomes unbalanced at times like that. Or, my attention span is such that reading so many words without a visual break drives me to madness....which is not entirely so - I have managed to read books without any pictures in them!! 'Course I can't remember the last one - I think it was something about rats in New York sewers or something...SPEAKING OF RATS...(what a blend!...)

You might be asking yourself how on earth can this rat verbalize his thoughts when clearly his vocal chords would be irrepairably damaged with the decapitation. Well, the answer of course is BLUETOOTH technology. Somehow bluetooth does something which reacts with something else and there is a signal of some sort in there...

More Of the SAME

Instead of finishing the last piece I posted as I said I would do, I decided to instead start a new one and then not finish it either. This one got a lot closer - and perhaps technically it is finished, since I probably won't work on it any more...
...an astute observer commented in the last post that Freud would probably have more to say about the woman's phallic neck than the tiny tyrannosaurus appendages...and now it seems I've done it again. I suppose I could argue that THIS woman has no neck...Her body connects to her head without the use of such a device! Which begs the question, where then does her boyfriend give her hickeys? Or does he? He obviously has issue with her breath, so perhaps he rarley even gets closer than pictured here...and so the vicious circle! She becomes stressed out because she doesn't feel loved and her breath gets worse! What with the worse breath, he (let's call him Mr.Hatsworth) can't be within a 3 meter radius of her without vomiting! She smells said vomit and vomits herself! Now her halitosis is lined with the aroma of vomit! He becomes continually frustrated until he leaves her and moves to Boise, Idaho where he drinks himself into a stupor on cheap vodka and falls down a flight of stairs breaking his neck..(he has one)
...She doesn't hear the tragic tale until several weeks later when Patricia Hatsworth (Mr. Hatsworth's sister) drops by with the news. In a fit of despondance, she drinks a bottle of toilet cleaner only to find it gets rid of the halitosis once and for all. She goes onto become a model on a cheap Canadian game show and has a torrid affair with the host. Then she gets hit by a truck.

Quite lackluster in my posting as of late...and so time for a lackluster post.
This piece, still in it's early stages, I call "Tyrannosaurus Home-Wrecker" Really there's not much else I can say about it. It is not based on anyone in particular as I have not been so lucky as to befriend (or even meet) an abomination of nature such as this. Freud might have something to say in regards to the replacement of breasts with tiny little appendages that appear to serve no useful purpose. The mere task of unscrewing a lid on a jar of jam would be an impossibility...
I plan to finish this piece and will certainly post the outcome...though quite possibly I will be swayed into playing Super Mario Bros. or watching Woody Woodpecker cartoons instead. Which brings me to the REAL QUESTION of the day... Would FREUD play Super Mario Bros. ? ? ? Or would he prefer a rousing game of Mike Tyson's PUNCH-OUT ? ? ? Now THAT gets the ol' brain cooking hey? Since neurology and psychiatry were not recognized as distinct medical fields at the time of Freud's training, one wonders if this would have led him onto a path of wasting his time with video games! At this point I am making less than any sense, so I digress. Maybe in the next post I'll have something to say.

Has it ever happened to you that you're living your life in whatever way you see fit and it suddenly dawns on you that you don't have any T-Shirts with a rooster on them? An epiphany such as this could plague one's mind ~ like a tapeworm slowly growing and feeding ~ eating away at life's pleasures.

Another Round of Sketches

Another post of some sketches from the ol' sketchbook of all places...I would pair them with drawing theories and/or anecdotes but I have yet to articulate them into some sort of cohesive manner. Or I don't really have any. I think I do have some actually~describing them is another matter entirely.

Here's a theory! If you're gunna re-design Betty and Veronica, Veronica should be extra slutty! In the famed issue of Betty and Veronica's Double Digest #151 there's one panel where Veronica looks a little bit like a Troll Doll...having said that I am shamed to reveal that I even know about this phenomenon much less read the thing.

I don't really having any theories about puking girls either...I suppose one could be slapped together as to why I draw them, though. I have drawn puking guys before too...and puking animals. Don't get me wrong, puking drawings take up less than .01% of my drawings....so I can't be that sick, can I?

'Course then I go and draw a streetwalker (who is of legal age I assure you) so that doesn't help my case any. ~and she's smoking no less. horrible.

Nothing says redemption like an amalgamation of a duck and a donkey though, does it? Webster's defines it differently, but my theory (aha!) is increased use of the image of this 'barnyard hybrid' in various cultures of the world will surely result in a change to that longstanding fact. I mean, what else could it be called? A Duckey? A Donkk? No, I think a 'REDEMPTION' is the most fitting.

CICAF ( the Chinese International Cartoon & Animation Industrial Exposition ) is a Chinese Animation Festival held annually in HANGZHOU, CHINA. I dunno how the 'F' in CICAF works with "Industrial Exposition" but nonetheless...Check out their site : http://www.cicaf.com/ I also dunno how to navigate thru the thing...it's all in Chinese after all. This year it runs from April 28th to May 2nd, so as of blogging this entry, tomorrow's the last day. It may be too late to go there, unless of course you are currently in HANGZHOU, CHINA...I am not.

But Studio Rice is! --and the booth thereof is crammed into the festival there somewhere...at least that's what I am told- again I am not there. Some of my artwork is, but I am not... The artwork here is from a show proposal called (translated into English) A Couple Chicks. Get this: the female lead- KATT- is living with two chickens -Toots and Simmons-in an apartment! In a building that prohibits animal boarders! In China yet!! ...It's like a Chinese version of 227 with poultry and wacky cartooniness. Well as Chinese as I can muster...I ain't Chinese.

Of course, the show bible is much more in depth with specifics and void of the vague 227 reference, but you get the idea.

...speaking of 227, remember the time Pee Wee Herman had a guest spot? ...and he was tied to a post or something? That was something...

Fat Fred

Unearthed from the confines of a cardboard box, a treasure was found. Not a treasure pertaining to the definition that a treasure is good, but a treasure of the nontheless variety. I am guessing I was in grade 4 or 5 or somewhere there when creativity struck in the form of FAT FRED. The premise was simple: there was this fat fellow named Fred. And he was to have his own comic. At least he was fat on the cover. As the "story" unfolds, Fred seems to lose weight. I reckon no one will be able to read these pages unless they are individually clicked on to enlarge, but they are being posted anyways so that the bigwigs at all the huge comic book companies can see them and clamber to get the rights to FAT FRED. Look for FAT FRED UNLIMITED at your local comic shop, wherein FRED will be sporting a wicked pony-tail and riding a Razor Scooter! (whilst listening to his iPOD NANO of course)

Here on page 1, note the ominous arm in panel 2. I remember how exciting that was to draw. I thought I was creating ominous suspense at the time...notice how a really creepy monster arm does not phase ol Fred, but a robber in a mask freaks him out!! HAHAHAHAAHAA

I do remember that FRED was never drawn anywhere else but this comic. I also recall that the gentleman that Fred runs into in the shack (on page 9) was a character that my cousin created to star in his own comic. Bit of a crossover there! As with most comics done by prepubescents, Fat Fred is simply some sort of stream of consciousness thing. I can't make much sense of it now...but 'twas an interesting find. For me anyways. Well, I wanted to post something!!

ED,EDD n' EDDY

I have been drawing Ed,Edd n'Eddy for just over eight years now, and am still continuously discovering new "tricks" and subleties for them. Perhaps that is part of what keeps the task from becoming monotonous. Oh sure, sometimes at 3 in the morning trying to draw Edd in a particular expression that seems to escape the pencil, I might become slightly frustrated in that he is staring to look like a Jim Davis creation...but all in all a satisfying journey. And it ain't over yet! Currently, and of course along with a slew of other fantastic artists, I am working on the yet untitled Ed,Edd n' Eddy movie. An arduous task indeed. I am posting here some sketches I did whilst playing the story over and over through my brain. I rarely post Eds stuff on this blog, but what the heck?

As an interesting note, the Edd pictured here is doing his trademark "tongue sticking out a little bit" move, which was pioneered by fantastic artist Raven Molisse. She is a talent to be reckoned with. Made me pull up my pants a little bit, that's for sure. Though I am often pulling up my pants. My own particular aversion to leather belts causes me to wear this weird belt that tends to loosen at innapropriate moments, and thusly, my pants fall down. True story.
